A simultaneous solution to the calibration and the correspondence problems for spaceborne laser altimeters

Calibration of spaceborne laser altimeters over undulating topography offers some advantages compared to alternative solutions. Yet, one problem in utilizing this concept is that due to systematic and random errors it is impossible to know the location of the spot on the ground that was illuminated by the laser beam. This knowledge is mandatory to solve the calibration parameters. Several solutions that have been proposed are either sensitive to the shape of the calibration site or inefficient. This paper presents a solution that is both efficient and that is an integral part of the calibration model. In addition to the presentation of the model its application on calibration sites that were considered for the calibration of the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) are presented.
